Create clear, fair, and immersive roleplay rules without starting from scratch.

Running a roleplay? Clear rules protect your world, your players, and your story. Without structure, even the best RP communities fall apart.

Use this ready-to-copy Roleplay Rules Template to:

  • Prevent drama before it starts
  • Keep roleplay immersive
  • Protect your community from NSFW abuse
  • Set expectations from day one

Copy it. Adapt it. Launch faster.

General Rules

These rules apply to all members, in and outside of roleplay.

1. Respect Every Member

Treat others with respect at all times. Harassment, bullying, or personal attacks are not tolerated.

2. No Harmful Insults

Disagreements are fine. Attacks that intentionally hurt, target, or degrade others are not.

3. No Escalating or Sensitive Debates

Avoid heated arguments about politics, ideology, religion, or “who is right.” Staff have the final say in disputes.

4. No Advertising or Self-Promotion

Do not promote external communities, products, or services without permission.

5. NSFW Content Policy

NSFW content is prohibited.

6. Use Mentions Responsibly

Avoid excessive mentions or spam.

7. No Overpowered Characters

Characters must have weaknesses and limits. Overpowered characters require explicit staff approval.

8. Follow Roleplay-Specific Rules

Each roleplay may have additional rules. These must be reviewed before creating a character.

9. In-Game Time Rules

By default, roleplay time follows real-world time.

Time skips are allowed only if all involved players agree. Time skips must be clearly marked in bold.

10. Character Death Rules

Killing another player’s character requires explicit permission. Forced character death without consent is prohibited.

11. Questions and Support

Members may:

  • Ask questions in the designated chat area
  • Contact staff privately for clarification

12. Rule Violations

Intentional or repeated rule violations may result in:

  • Warning
  • Removal from roleplay
  • Temporary or permanent ban

Roleplay Conduct Rules

These rules ensure immersion and fairness inside roleplay.

1. Formatting Standards

Follow your roleplay’s formatting guidelines for:

  • Dialogue
  • Actions
  • Thoughts
  • OOC comments

Consistency keeps roleplay readable and immersive.

2. Stay In-Scene

You may only interact with characters who are:

  • In the same conversation or thread
  • Present in the same scene

If you play multiple characters, select the correct character to write your message.

3. No Metagaming

If your character meets someone for the first time, they do not automatically know:

  • Their backstory
  • Their powers
  • Their secrets
  • Information from character details

Your character must learn information through roleplay.

4. No Retconning

If something happens in RP, it happened.

Example: A broken leg cannot be ignored in the next scene. Serious injuries must have realistic consequences. Do not rewrite events unless staff approve it.

5. No Powerplay

Do not control:

  • Another player’s actions
  • Their reactions
  • Their outcomes

Let other players decide how their character responds.

Character Creation Rules

Keep characters balanced and compatible with the world.

1. Characters Must Fit the Setting

Appearance, race, weapons, abilities, and profession must match the roleplay’s world and rules. Always check roleplay-specific rules and any extra-world restrictions.

3. Starting Location

Characters may begin at any created location or event within the world.

4. What Is Not Written Does Not Exist

If it is not in your character sheet, it does not exist in canon. No hidden abilities. No surprise powers.

We recommend 1-2 characters per roleplay to prevent burnout.

6. No Overpowered Characters

Even staff-approved powerful characters must have:

  • Clear limits
  • Weaknesses
  • Logical boundaries

Balance over power.

7. Character Changes and Development

Character changes must:

  • Be submitted to staff
  • Be based on in-roleplay events
  • Be approved before taking effect

Growth is encouraged. Retconning is not.

Why Clear Roleplay Rules Matter

Without rules, RP communities face:

  • Drama
  • Godmodding conflicts
  • OOC arguments
  • Immersion-breaking behavior
  • Member burnout

Clear rules:

  • Protect storytelling
  • Support fairness
  • Make moderation easier
  • Attract serious roleplayers

If you want a long-term, healthy roleplay, structure is not optional.

Copy This Template

You can:

  • Add it to your roleplay’s rules or documentation
  • Adapt it to your custom world
  • Modify what fits; remove what doesn’t

But never run a roleplay world without boundaries.
